Kountze calls itself the Gateway to the Big Thicket, and the name is earned: the headquarters and visitor center of the Big Thicket National Preserve sit just north of town on US-69/287, and more than 85 percent of Hardin County is still forest. The town itself started as a stop on the Sabine and East Texas Railroad in 1881 and became the county seat in 1887, and today the Hardin County Courthouse, the school, and the homes along Pine Street share the land with Cypress Creek, Village Creek, and Pine Island Bayou, all of them draining slowly east toward the Neches. Outside the small sewered core, properties here depend on their own on-site sewage facilities.
This is some of the toughest septic ground in Southeast Texas. The county is nearly flat, sitting only about 85 feet above sea level at Kountze, and the sandy loam surface over red clay holds water for a long time after the heavy rains that define this climate. In the wetter, low-lying parts of the Big Thicket, the water table can sit close enough to the surface that a conventional drain field has nowhere to send effluent. That is why the great majority of new systems we install around Kountze are aerobic treatment units with spray distribution, which treat wastewater inside the tanks and apply it on top of the ground instead of into it. The required soil evaluation by our licensed site evaluators confirms the depth to clay and to seasonal water on your specific lot before anything is designed.
Kountze sits roughly 80 miles south of our Lufkin shop, down US-69 through Woodville, so we do not pretend to be around the corner. What we do is run regular routes into Hardin County and schedule Kountze work in batches, which keeps installations, pump-outs, and the recurring aerobic maintenance visits on time and dependable. We handle OSSF permits with Hardin County’s local authorized agent from the site evaluation through the final inspection. Along with Kountze itself we serve Silsbee and Lumberton, Sour Lake out State Highway 326, Saratoga, Village Mills, and the rural homes scattered along the FM roads through the Thicket.
We also serve nearby communities: Silsbee, TX · Lumberton, TX · Woodville, TX. Or browse all of our East Texas service areas.

Septic questions from Kountze and Hardin County homeowners
Yes. Installing, replacing, or significantly altering an on-site sewage facility (OSSF) anywhere in Texas requires a permit, and for Kountze-area properties it is issued through Hardin County’s local authorized agent. Whippoorwill Septic handles the licensed site evaluation, system design, application, and final inspection coordination as part of the job.
Because of the water. Hardin County is flat and low, the clay subsoil drains slowly, and in the wetter parts of the Big Thicket the water table can sit close to the surface for much of the year, which leaves a conventional drain field with nowhere to send effluent. An aerobic unit treats the wastewater inside its tanks and sprays it on the surface, so it works where trenches would stay waterlogged. The soil evaluation on your lot settles the question.
Every 3 to 5 years is the usual range for a full-time household, and the same applies to the trash tank on an aerobic system. Heavier use, a garbage disposal, or a smaller tank shortens the interval. Because we schedule Kountze on regular routes, it is easy to set up a pumping interval that stays on the calendar.
Cut water use to a minimum right away: short showers, no laundry, no dishwasher. In flat country like Hardin County, a saturated drain field or spray area simply cannot absorb more water until the ground drains, and pushing more through the system forces sewage back toward the house. If the backup continues once the yard has dried out, or if it happens after every storm, call 936-824-2281 and we will inspect the tanks and the field for a deeper problem.
We do, and Texas requires one. Aerobic units must be checked by a licensed maintenance provider on an ongoing basis, typically every four months, with reports filed with the permitting authority. Our contracts cover those visits for Kountze-area systems, including aerator, pump, float, chlorinator, and spray head checks, and we schedule them on our regular Hardin County routes.
It depends on the system the soil evaluation calls for, the tank sizes, and the site, and around the Big Thicket those details change from one lot to the next. Rather than quote a range that will not fit your property, we would like to look at it and give you a firm number. Call 936-824-2281 and we will set that up.
