Rusk is the county seat of Cherokee County and the eastern terminus of the Texas State Railroad, whose excursion trains still steam through the Piney Woods to Palestine. Jim Hogg, the first native-born Texan to serve as governor, was born just outside town. A place with that much history carries an older housing stock to match — homes near the courthouse square that have been on septic for generations, often with tanks and lines that predate anyone’s paperwork — alongside newer homesteads scattered through the rolling pine and redland hills.
Those hills are exactly why no two septic jobs around Rusk look alike. Sandy loam ridges can support a conventional drain field without complaint, while slopes and pockets of tight red clay choke one out and call for an aerobic treatment system instead. Texas requires a licensed soil evaluation on the specific lot before a system is permitted, and our licensed site evaluators perform that analysis so the design is built on data, not assumptions.
US-69 runs straight from our Lufkin shop through Wells and Alto to Rusk, and our trucks make that drive on regular routes for pump-outs, inspections, repairs, and installs. For new and replacement systems we carry the full OSSF permit through the county’s authorized agent for Cherokee County — evaluation, design, application, and final inspection. We cover the city of Rusk and the communities around it, including Alto, Wells, Maydelle, and New Summerfield, from small in-town lots to large rural tracts.
We also serve nearby communities: Jacksonville, TX · Nacogdoches, TX · Henderson, TX — or browse all of our East Texas service areas.

Septic questions from Rusk homeowners
OSSF permits in Texas are issued through the county’s authorized agent, and one is required to install, replace, or significantly alter a system anywhere in Cherokee County. Whippoorwill Septic manages the entire process for Rusk properties, from the soil evaluation and design through the application and final inspection.
It starts with a licensed soil evaluation on your land, which determines whether a conventional drain field or an aerobic system fits your site. From there we design the system, secure the permit through the county’s authorized agent, install, and coordinate the final inspection. Rural tracts around Rusk usually offer good siting options, which helps the design.
Yes, and older Rusk homes are familiar territory. Many have tanks and drain lines installed long before current records, so we typically start with a locate-and-inspect visit to map what’s in the ground and assess its condition before recommending pumping, repair, or replacement.
Most households should pump every 3 to 5 years. Bigger households, garbage disposals, and smaller or aging tanks — common in Rusk’s older neighborhoods — call for shorter intervals. If the tank has never been opened in your time at the property, start with an inspection.
The soil chooses for you. Where sandy loam runs deep, a conventional system is simpler and cheaper to live with; where red clay or slope limits absorption, an aerobic system is the workable answer. Keep in mind Texas requires aerobic systems to be checked by a licensed maintenance provider, typically every four months — our maintenance plans cover that.
We serve Rusk itself plus Alto, Wells, Maydelle, New Summerfield, and the rural land between them. Our trucks already run the US-69 corridor between Lufkin and Rusk on regular routes, so reaching properties on the FM roads off that corridor is part of a normal week. Call 936-824-2281 to get on the schedule.
Whether it’s a pump-out near the square or a new aerobic system in the redland hills, Whippoorwill Septic serves Rusk and southern Cherokee County with licensed, insured, one-call service.
