Cushing grew up fast. The town was founded in 1902 on word that the Texas and New Orleans Railroad would lay track through, was platted in 1903, incorporated in 1905, and within a decade had a bank, a hotel, a weekly paper, and sawmills shipping East Texas lumber in every direction. Its population peaked near 1,500 in 1925 before the surrounding forest was cut over, and it has settled in at roughly 560 residents today. The town sits where State Highway 204 meets FM 225 in the extreme northwest corner of the county, about 18 miles from Nacogdoches, with Sacul a few miles west, the Cherokee County line just beyond that, and Rusk County starting a short drive north toward Laneville and Mount Enterprise. It has also been tested: three fires over its history and an EF2 tornado in March 2022.
That history shows up in the septic work. Inside the city limits we see railroad-era homes on modest lots with tanks and drain lines installed long before current rules, where a failed field often has nowhere to expand and an aerobic treatment unit with spray distribution is the realistic replacement. Outside town, the old cutover timberland is now pasture, hay meadow, and replanted pine, and the choice comes down to what is under the grass: Nacogdoches County’s red clay drains too slowly for a conventional absorption field, while deeper sandy loam ridges take water well and support a conventional drain field at lower cost. The licensed soil evaluation our site evaluators perform on your specific tract is the required first step, and it settles that question before any design is drawn.
From our shop in Lufkin we run US-59 to Nacogdoches, then north on US 259 to SH 204 or up FM 225, about 40 miles in all, and we make that run on regular routes rather than one-off trips. For Cushing properties we handle OSSF permitting through the county’s authorized agent for Nacogdoches County; for a tract that falls across the line in Cherokee or Rusk County we work with that county’s authorized agent instead. Our coverage takes in the city of Cushing along with Sacul, Looneyville, Trawick, Reklaw, Laneville, and Mount Enterprise, plus the pasture and timber land between them.

Septic questions from Cushing homeowners
Yes. Installing, replacing, or significantly altering an on-site sewage facility anywhere in Texas requires a permit, and for Cushing and the rest of Nacogdoches County it is issued through the county’s authorized agent. Whippoorwill Septic takes that off your plate: our licensed site evaluators do the soil evaluation, we design the system, file the application, and coordinate the final inspection.
It depends on your lot, not your preference. Red clay, which is common across Nacogdoches County, holds water and defeats a conventional drain field, so those sites need an aerobic system that treats wastewater in the tanks and sprays it on the surface. Where sandy loam runs deep, a conventional system is simpler and cheaper to maintain. A licensed soil evaluation on your Cushing property gives the answer, and it is a required part of permitting anyway.
Every 3 to 5 years is the usual interval. Older in-town homes in Cushing sometimes have smaller tanks than a modern household needs, which shortens that window, and a garbage disposal or a full house does the same. If you do not know when the tank was last opened, an inspection and sludge measurement is the right starting point.
Treat it as a real warning, not a nuisance. The alarm usually means the water level in the pump tank is too high or the aerator has stopped, either of which means the system is no longer treating properly. Cut back on water use, do not just silence the alarm, and call 936-824-2281 so we can find the stuck float, failed pump, or aerator problem behind it.
Because Texas requires it. Aerobic systems must be checked by a licensed maintenance provider on a regular schedule, typically every four months, with reports filed with the permitting authority. Our maintenance plans for Cushing-area homeowners cover those required visits plus the chlorine supply, spray head checks, and component inspections that keep the unit running and your file in good standing.
There is no honest single number. A pump-out depends on tank size and access, and a new system depends on whether your soil calls for conventional or aerobic, how big the household is, and the layout of the tract. Call 936-824-2281, tell us what you are seeing, and we will give you a real figure for your Cushing property before any work begins.
From an alarm that will not quit on FM 225 to a new system on pasture off SH 204, Whippoorwill Septic covers Cushing and northwest Nacogdoches County with licensed, insured, one-call service.
