Douglas sits on State Highway 21, the modern road over the old El Camino Real, about 14 miles west of Nacogdoches and four miles east of the Angelina River, which marks the county’s western edge. The pavilion at the SH 21 and FM 225 crossroads holds a cluster of state historical markers for a reason: Spanish friars founded Mission Concepción among the Hainai people just south of here in 1716, and the town itself was laid out around a central square in 1836 and named for General Kelsey H. Douglass. It is still unincorporated today, a community of farms, pasture, timber tracts, and homes spread along the highway and the county roads, with the Douglass ISD campus at its center and Lake Nacogdoches, the city reservoir on Loco Bayou, a few miles to the east off FM 225.
With no city to run a sewer line, every house, barn apartment, and new build in and around Douglas depends on its own on-site sewage facility. The good news is that this part of Nacogdoches County usually has room to work with. Where sandy loam runs deep enough, a conventional drain field on an acre or more is often the simplest, most economical system to own; where the county’s well-known red clay sits close to the surface, or on low ground toward the river bottoms that stays wet after a rain, an aerobic treatment unit becomes the practical answer. The licensed soil evaluation our site evaluators perform on your specific tract is what decides it, and Texas requires that evaluation before any permit is issued.
Our trucks take US-59 north to Nacogdoches and then head west on SH 21, roughly 35 miles door to door, so Douglas is a routine run for us rather than a special trip. Because the community is unincorporated, OSSF permits for Douglas properties go through the county’s authorized agent for Nacogdoches County, and we carry that paperwork from the soil evaluation and design through the application and final inspection. We serve Douglas itself, the homes around Lake Nacogdoches, Looneyville and Sacul to the north, and the farms and homesteads along SH 21 and the county roads out toward the Angelina River.
We also serve nearby communities: Nacogdoches, TX · Rusk, TX · Lufkin, TX. Or browse all of our East Texas service areas.

Septic questions from Douglas homeowners
Permits for on-site sewage facilities in unincorporated areas like Douglas come from the county’s authorized agent, in this case for Nacogdoches County. Texas requires one to install, replace, or significantly alter a system. Whippoorwill Septic assembles and submits the whole package for you, including the licensed site evaluation, the design, the application, and the final inspection scheduling.
Often yes, and acreage is a real advantage. A conventional system needs enough area for the trenches and soil that absorbs water at the right rate, and many tracts along SH 21 and the county roads around Douglas offer both. The deciding factor is the licensed soil evaluation on your land; if red clay or a seasonal water table shows up where the field would go, we will tell you and design an aerobic system instead.
Plan on every 3 to 5 years for a typical household, sooner if several generations share the house, you run a garbage disposal, or the tank is on the small side. Rural tanks around Douglas often go longer than they should simply because nobody drives by to remind you. We can inspect the tank, check the sludge level, and put you on a schedule.
Before the slab, and ideally before the house is sited. A licensed soil evaluation on your tract tells us whether a conventional or aerobic system fits, and that in turn affects where the house, driveway, and well can go. Our licensed site evaluators do that evaluation, we design the system, pull the permit through the county’s authorized agent, install, and coordinate the final inspection with your builder’s timeline.
Yes. On older farms and homesteads in western Nacogdoches County the tank and drain lines may predate any paperwork, and a failing system is an expensive surprise after closing. We locate the components, open and inspect the tank, check the drain field for saturation or surfacing, and give you a written picture of what you are buying so you can negotiate or plan repairs.
That depends on what you need: a routine pump-out on an accessible tank is a very different job from a new aerobic system on a clay tract, and site conditions around Douglas vary from one property to the next. We would rather look at your situation and quote it accurately than guess. Call 936-824-2281 and we will give you a straight answer.
Whether it is a pump-out on the farm, a drain field that has quit draining, or a new system for a house going up on acreage, Whippoorwill Septic covers Douglas and western Nacogdoches County with licensed, insured service.
